5.3. Syllabus

 

The course will address the following topics:

 

Lectures.

  • Literacy and epigraphy. Introduction to Greek epigraphy. Introduction to the epigraphies of the fragmentary languages.
  • Latin epigraphy: 'epigraphic habit' and epigraphic culture; personal onomastics; main types: content and support; autopsy, critical edition and management of corpora; Imperial epigraphy; epigraphy of senators, knights and decurions: the prosopographical method.

Practice sessions.

  • Reading and commentary of Greek inscriptions. Reading and commentary of Paleoitalic, Gaulish and Paleohispanic inscriptions. Management of major corpora and databases.
  • Reading and commentary of Latin inscriptions, particularly concerning emperors, senators, knights and decurions. Management of major corpora, databases and prosopographic repertoires. 

Field work.

  • Visit to an epigraphic collection: autopsy, photographic record and autopsy field.
